What’s happening in Glasgow?

The Glasgow Earth vigil will run for each day of COP (apart from the 6th November where we will be taking part in the big march) from 1100 to 1700. We will be flexible on location, moving to where our powerful presence will have the most impact. For the latest on where we will be you can join our Telegram group. Our mission statement for the vigil is here.

We will also have a number of ‘Coffee at COP’ events based at the Glasgow Quaker meeting house. These will be more structured events with speakers discussing faith, the climate emergency and climate justice. More information to come!

What happens at an Earth Vigil?

Earth vigils are an opportunity to sit and reflect with those of all or no faiths. We usually sit in silence, but sometimes there will be prayer, song, guided meditation chanting and more. We would encourage you to make yourself comfortable when sitting, that may involve a wee camping chair, and warm and waterproof clothing. Some people are big fans of ponchos. There is a very low risk of arrest, our intention is that the vigil is a peaceful and lawful activity. If you have any other questions about the vigil then please join the Telegram group and ask!

We will also be creating an overnight vigil on the eve of the start and end of COP. These vigils will run from 2300 to dawn, starting on the evening of the 30th October and the 11th November. The locations are TBC. If you come to these vigils it’s especially important you bring warm clothes and we would recommend bringing something to sit on.

Coffee at COP

Coffee at COP will happen from 0930 to 1100 at the Glasgow Quaker Meeting House. In an ironic twist we don’t actually provide coffee so please bring your own, but we will do our best to make sure there are some plant based snacks available! Please register on the eventbrite links to attend.

There is level wheelchair access to the Rainbow room, but it means entering by the back door, which can be reached from Elmbank St Lane.

Monday 1st November – Shannon Shah, Director of Faith for the Climate – register to attend at this eventbrite link.

Wednesday 3rd November – Discussion between XR Interfaith Vigil and Alastair McIntosh: ‘Satyagrapha: an Interfaith Reflection on Nonviolence’. The in person event is now full, however there is also a link if you want to follow this on zoom.

Friday 5th November – Shantigarbha, author of Burning House: A Buddhist response to the Climate and Ecological Emergency. The eventbrite link is here.

Monday 8th November – This session run by Rosie Deedes and Lorna Wallace of Capacitar will be focused on supporting youth and climate activists. Book at eventbrite here.

Wednesday 10th November – Parami of the Glasgow Buddhist Centre talks about love as a revolutionary force! Book your tickets on eventbrite here.

Friday 12th November – This coffee morning will bring a unique insight from Alejandra Eifflaender into how a community grows sustainably through shared gardening initiatives in ‘Grow Macclesfield’. Alejandra is a bright example of a community leader in action, with ideas that grew for her in her own community in Peru.  Register at Eventbrite here.
